Opened in 1964 and considered to be amongst the best ten golf courses in the world, Sotogrande is yet another masterpiece designed by Robert Trent Jones. Known as "Old Sotogrande" so as to differentiate it from its younger neighbor, Valderrama, it is situated on the other side of the road. It's a private club open to visitors but reservations must be made well in advance. With more than 30 years of history, Sotogrande has mature and beautiful trees, including cork oaks and palms, all of which serve as added obstacles. Other than making it seem larger than its 6,820 yards, the water hazards play an important part on this course. The club also has a par 3, 9-hole course for those who don't wish to play a full round of golf. The imported Bermuda grass of the fairways has practically no rough, making the playing surface of Sotogrande a delight as well as a challenge.
- Non-golfers take a hot air balloon trip or helicopter tour of Andalusia’s coast
- Sushi evening on board while yacht moves to La Linea de la Concepcion
Day 6:
- Golfers play Valderrama G.C. with local pro teacher and lecturer.
Valderrama is the No.1 golf course in mainland Europe and was host of the 1997 Ryder cup, with no hole of less than championship quality but it can be fully enjoyed by players of all handicaps. The amenability of the golf course to the handicap golfer and its deliberate severity to the championship player owe much to the extensive range of tees. Each hole has a Professional tee, a Club Championship tee, an Executive tee and a seniors' tee, as well as a ladies Professional tee and a ladies Club tee.
The annual flagship event of the PGA European Tour, the Volvo Masters, was inaugurated at Valderrama in 1988 and was held annually through 1996. Winners such as Faldo, Lyle, Montgomerie, Langer and McNulty testify to the championship qualities of the course. Valderrama has two prevailing winds: the Poniente from the land, which in summer can be very hot, and the Levant from the Mediterranean, which brings a cooler sea breeze. The changed conditions when one is blowing add variety to a golf course that is already rich in shot values. Length: 6,820 yards. Par: 71
